Some Useful Information on Desalter and Desalting Process

Desalting is basically a process in which salt is removed from the crude product. Along with the removal of salt, suspended solids, various water-soluble trace metals, sands and iron oxides are also removed in this particular process. There are various online outlets where you can buy best desalter parts and components.

There are mainly 7 purposes associated with the process:

  • To bring down the plugging and fouling of crude oil exchangers and fractionators due to salt deposition
  • To reduce corrosion rate of crude oil
  • To prevent costly and time-consuming plant shut downs
  • To significantly bring down the intake of neutralizers
  • To eliminate metals that may contaminate (or poison) the reformer catalyst
  • To get exceptional level of operating flexibility due to slug or high tank bottom issues
  • To accomplish a plant life this is more than the average

There are 3 main types of desalter that are used these days:

Natural desalter: Here, the settling time is provided to the salts, sediments, water and sludge which acts under gravity, settles down in the bottom and then finally drained.

Chemical desalter: In this desalter, various chemicals are added to the crude so as to remove salts, water, sludge and sediments. Using chemicals is beneficial as it can reduce the surface tension for easy removal of salt. This and natural desalter, both are preferred in scenarios when the crude is having low salt-content or it is a batch process.

Electrochemical desalter: This is considered by many to be the best among the three as it makes use of electric field. Here, demulsifier is used as the chemical.
