Crude Oil Desalters And Their Most Common Methods

A crude oil desalter is a device used extensively in the oil industries and refineries to remove inorganic salts, water, and sediment from incoming petroleum crude oil.  The removal of salts, water and sediments is essential for avoiding the corrosion generated by hydrochloric acid by the hydrolysis of chloride salts present in the processed crude oil (magnesium chloride and calcium chloride). Any salt that is not removed, acts as a threat that can poison potential catalysts used in various petroleum refinery processes.  Common methods of crude oil desalting   Chemical and electrostatic separation - Washing of the salt from crude oil with the help of water oil and water phases are separated in a settling container. In the next step, chemicals are added to break up the emulsion to calm down the saltwater droplets more rapidly.   Chemical desalting - Demulsifiers, which are the water and chemical surfactant, are added to crude and then heated so that salt and othe
