When produced to refinery processing, crude oil possesses many unwanted contaminants. They include sand, inorganic salts, drilling mud, polymer, corrosion byproduct, and many others. Inorganic salts.

When inorganic salt gets disintegrated in the crude oil preheat exchangers and heaters, it creates hydrogen chloride gas. Then, it gets compressed to liquid hydrochloric acid at an overhead structure of the distillation column, causing equipment to severely corrode.

Iron sulfide and oxide.

To prevent breaking down of equipment or corrosion due to salts in the crude oil, you can implement corrosion control. However, the product used to control corrosion of oil field appliances contains particulate iron sulfide and oxide. Condensation of these substances does lead to plugging of heat exchanger trains, tower trays, heater pipes, and others. Besides, they can also cause corrosion to any cover they are accelerated. Sand.
